Kaleigh McIver Ready to twirl in the Black Rock, Ct. Parade , 2016

In spite of three other events in the small town of Newport, NH, on December 6, the "Willey-Perra Community Giving Benefit Gala" raised the most amount of money in eighteen years, even though children were admitted free. The Red Star show was one of the best, according to several who come every year. The program, unique to Newport, was started by Gina Hutchinson's brother in 1981. After his passing in 1989, the family promised to continue it as long as possible. This year, the program will give toys, coats, hats, boots and mittens to more than 225 area children. Because of it, The Marines do not have to use their resources in Toys for Tots for Newport.

With many costume changes, "A Classic Christmas" included Tiana Barton and Tabitha Flattes, both age 6, in their first show. Also dazzling was National Champion Alyssa McLaughlin, age 27, who performed beautifully to Bing Crosby's White Christmas and Miss Greater Derry, Jessica Avelar, who showed that twirling and lovely dance technique can give a beautiful, unique, view of The Nutcracker.

The team was given a cast party after the show by restaurateur Jane Rastallis and her staff at Ye Ole Courthouse, next to the Opera House, in Newport. She has graciously hosted The Red Stars and their families, for more than ten years. The Red Stars and The Willey-Perra Board of Directors, THANKS to ALL who made the evening a great success.

As if that were not enough for the weekend, six Red Stars suited up again Sunday afternoon for a performance at The Pleasant Valley Nursing Home in Derry to celebrate the 95th birthday of Gina's mother in law, Joan Hutchinson. Isabella Bolduc, Olivia Bollhorst, Emily Cowette, Allie Nault and Morgan Torre brought smiles to the residents as they twirled to classic holiday songs by Bing Crosby, Dean Martin and the Glen Miller Orchestra.

It was a wonderful weekend of helping children as well as the elderly to share the Christmas spirit with the Red Stars.

NEXT STOP ON THE SANTA TOUR- MISS MAJORETTE OF MASS. JAN.11.

Bottom Right: If you have seen "The Christmas Story" movie, you will recognize these costumes as they make The Red Stars look like the "Major Award" lamp. If you have not seen it; DO IT!!! A real classic Christmas movie about a classic old time Christmas!

Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Competition  2014

CONGRATULATIONS Jessica Avelar, for winning the Lisa Cripps Richer Humanitarian Award! After some disappointments in the pageant, this was the final award given. Jamie Staton WMUR-TV host choked up in awarding it. When he announced that it went to Jessica Avelar, it could not have been more perfect. That award describes this young woman perfectly and follows up on other such awards she has been given in twirling. As her coach and the choreographer of the routine she did not get to try again, I would not trade that one recognition for Jessica for a whole show of "Jessica twirling". My team is built on the importance of character and Jessica has always been the epitome of that.
Standing tall....that's what Jessica Avelar did in the final moments of Miss NH 2014.

RED STARS IN SCORSESE MOVIE OPENING ON CHRISTMAS DAY

Ashley Andrew, Salem, NH, and  former Syracuse University Orange Girl and Alyssa McLaughlin, Derry, NH, former University of Connecticut Feature Twirler can be seen in "The Wolf of Wall Street", which debuts on Christmas Day, starring, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matthew McConaughey, Rob Reiner and Jonah Hill and is directed by Martin Scorsese.
Both Red Star Twirlers were recruited through a New York casting agency, who contacted Red Star Coach Gina Hutchinson, over a year ago. Both women spent two days in New York City learning their cameo role and getting fitted for their Wonder Woman look-alike costumes. With them in the scene are members of the Temple University Marching Band, dressed in boxer shorts.
The movie is the true story of the rise and fall of Jordan Belfort, a Wall Street trader, who lived high on other people's money until he got caught by the Securities and Exchange Commission and sent to jail. The movie is based on his autobiography.

Andrew is now at Boston University getting her Masters Degree. McLaughlin is working full time at Aetna in Hartford, while getting her Masters Degree at UConn. You can see them in the current trailers on TV and online.

The Newport, NH Tigerettes performed at the Newport/ Franklin football game and are now gearing up for  "A Classic Christmas" gala with the Derry Red Star Twirlers at the Newport Opera House on Dec. 6, 2014 at 7:00 PM. Coach Gina Hutchinson got a huge surprise as her former Towle High School Band Director, Robert Howard, came to Newport from Manchester to see her and the twirlers. They had not seen each other in 48 years! "Mr. Howard" had been a Drum Major and was a really good twirler, who taught twirling to the majorettes as well as directed the marching and concert bands. For years, Hutchinson has talked about him in interviews as an inspiration for the Class of 1966. He started his teaching career with her class and "graduated" with them as well. No one knew where he went. Turns out it was to Pentucket Regional in Groveland, Mass. where one of her current assistants went to school and only twenty miles from Gina's International Twirling Champions studio in Derry, The Red Stars.

The Red Stars performed on the ice at the Monarch's game at The Verizon Center in Manchester, NH on March 4th! The team has enjoyed a fun "Tour" since New Years!
